How to Travel with Wegovy (Without Ruining Your Medication)

I’m a Canadian primarily living in New Zealand who loves to travel for long periods of time — I’m also on Wegovy. I’ve had to learn how to travel with Wegovy injection pens and get ahold of new ones overseas. Fortunately, it’s been much easier than I was expecting. Here’s everything I can tell you about travelling with Wegovy from personal experience.

Can you travel with Wegovy?

Yes, you can absolutely travel with Wegovy pens, it just requires some planning. I started taking injections in New Zealand and have since sourced more in Canada and Thailand. Trying to keep the pens cool is the biggest challenge, especially when travelling in hot countries, but it hasn’t failed me yet.

If you’re travelling short term on a vacation under 1 month, you’ll have a much easier time of this. You can bring a pen (or two) from home and keep it cold. Getting a new prescription is where it gets a bit more complex, but it’s still entirely doable.

And of course, the same rules apply whether you’re travelling with Wegovy or travelling with another GLP1 like Ozempic or Mounjaro. I’m just a Wegovy gal, so that’s the main brand I’ve chosen for the article.

Is it easy to get Wegovy when travelling abroad?

So far, I’ve found it easy to top up my Wegovy prescription when travelling. Actually, it was way easier than I thought it would be. At this point, it’s super widely available around the world, but you still need to check before you go.

I couldn’t find a definitive list of every country where Wegovy is available, but I looked up more than a dozen countries from Ecuador and Namibia to Myanmar and Qatar. Most had it available at mainstream pharmacies, some required specialist visits or sourcing from international suppliers. You would struggle to get it in Vanuatu, for example.

So you won’t necessarily be able to find it in every country —  always check first — but it’s becoming more available all the time. For example, when I looked into getting it in Malaysia in April 2026, Wegovy had only just become available a month earlier.

During my research, I found that most countries that had Wegovy also had Ozempic. However, funnily enough, New Zealand only offers Wegovy for weight loss (as of May 2026). But I expect availability will change soon and Ozempic will hit the market for weight loss. (You can still get Ozempic for type 2 diabetes.)

How to get a new Wegovy pen when travelling

This felt like the most confusing part when I started travelling with Wegovy. But it’s not so bad! Here are the steps you can follow to pick up a new Wegovy or Ozempic pen when you’re away from home.

  1. Research pharmacies/doctors online. I just did a simple search for “Wegovy Thailand” and Google did the rest.
  2. Check the pricing. I was expecting Wegovy to be more affordable in Thailand, but it was actually more expensive than at home. I pay 500 NZD in New Zealand, but it was 13,000 THB in Thailand. I’m sure you can find it for cheaper, but I think the markup is the cost of using an English-speaking service with a reputable source.
  3. Meet with a doctor in person or virtually. Some are happy to do a video or simple phone call to discuss before giving you a prescription. You’ll almost always have to speak to someone, though. And if you don’t? I’d consider that a red flag.
  4. Take your prescription to a pharmacy or arrange a delivery. You may need to research pharmacies that carry it, or the clinic/doctor you speak to may be able to recommend some. I found delivery incredibly easy, but of course it comes with the risk of getting delayed or lost in the mail.

Important: I do not recommend looking for the cheapest GLP-1 option you can find no matter where you are in the world lol. There was some counter fit Ozempic going around in Thailand for a while. And even the UK is struggling with unsafe knock-offs people are buying intentionally to save money. Both situations are bad.

My experience getting Wegovy in Thailand

I’d only ever sourced Wegovy from my family doctors and local pharmacies in New Zealand and Canada. I had to get my first non-home-country Wegovy pen when I was in Thailand.

I searched up some pharmacies online and found several English-speaking options. I ended up organizing a delivery from the location in Bangkok directly to my hotel in Phuket — it really couldn’t have been easier.

They sent it in a special cooling box, and I gave the hotel a heads up that I was expecting a delivery. I explained that needed to go in the fridge if I wasn’t there when it arrived. Make sure you make that part crystal clear. I sent a WhatsApp message to the hotel in English and copied in a Google Translation in Thai just in case. I didn’t want fridge to get mixed up with freezer, ya know?

While the hotel was ready to receive my package, the delivery person actually took it straight to the post office. They called the hotel and said I had to go pick it up in person and bring my passport. So that was a bit inconvenient, but I just took a 10-minute Grab (taxi) to the post office and back. The pen/box stayed cool and I got the package about three days after I ordered it.

If you’re ordering a new Wegovy prescription in Thailand (or Ozempic or Mounjaro), I can recommend MedEx. They’re based in Bangkok but sent my package to my hotel in Phuket. I paid 13,000 THB for a 1mg pen. More expensive than at home, but still worth it for the smooth experience.

Tips on how to travel with a Wegovy pen

After doing some international travelling with Wegovy for several months now, here are my best tips for how to make travel with Wegovy as easy as possible.

  • Get a special Wegovy travel case. I found more options online when I Googled “Ozempic travel case” but it obviously does the same thing. I don’t love supporting Amazon, but that’s where I found the best one. Options were limited (ie. non-existent) in-store in Canada and New Zealand.
  • Remember to book accommodation with a fridge. While you can travel with Wegovy unrefrigerated for up to 6 weeks, I find it feels more reliable to keep it cool. Especially if you’re travelling in hot countries! Booking.com, Hotels.com, Airbnb, Agoda, yadda yadda — they all let you filter your search for accom with a fridge.
  • Don’t forget the Wegovy when you leave your accommodation. My biggest fear! I carry these small blue post-it notes with me and put one on the outside of the fridge and even the front door. No matter how long I stay in a place and stop “seeing” the blue post-its, I know to look for them when doing the final idiot check. (We also use them to remember to unplug our Google Chromecast, check the safe, and other stuff — great travel hack all around.)
  • Always pack your Wegovy in your carry-on bag. You’re technically allowed to put it in your checked bag, but luggage sometimes gets lost and/or abused on its journey, so keeping your Wegovy with you is just wise. You should also keep a copy of your prescription with you. I’ve never had anyone ask, but that’s the advice from the CDC, CATSA, Singapore Airways, and basically everyone.

Other considerations when travelling with Wegovy

Here are some other things to consider before you hit the road with a Wegovy pen. It’s all manageable, but to make sure you do it right, (ie. don’t lose or expire the pen) you gotta use some brain power.

Find the right Wegovy travel case

Diabetes pens have been around for ages, so there are lots of case options out there that you can use for travelling with Wegovy or Ozempic.

I checked local pharmacies in both New Zealand and Canada, but didn’t find anything that would work. But when I Googled “Ozempic travel case” lots of options came up. Unfortunately, (or fortunately depending on your shopping habits), most of the good ones were on Amazon. So while I think Bezos is the worst, sometimes needs must.

I got this Wegovy travel case that holds two pens, and it’s been perfectly fine. I also considered this one with a little thermometer on the outside. You’ll never be in a situation where you need to carry 4 pens like some of the cases designed for insulin have, so you can get away with a pretty small bag. Obviously ideal for travelling.

Wegovy needle disposal when you're travelling

Novo Nordisk sends out safe disposal boxes for free if you’re in the U.S. But no matter where you live, your local pharmacy can give you one to bring travelling as well.

According to Novo Nordisk, you can put your used needles in a thick plastic container in a pinch. Something like a laundry detergent bottle if you don’t have a safe disposal box.

If you’re not travelling loooong-term, you could find a solid case to put your used needles in until you’re back home. I use these small hard plastic cases that once held hair ties.

Travel insurance for Wegovy or Ozempic

Your travel insurance likely doesn’t cover existing conditions or any non-essential medication. (Even if you consider Wegovy essential, if it’s not an emergency, insurance won’t cover the cost.) So you’ll be paying for it out of pocket, which might be a bit of a shock if you have a subsidy back home.

How to travel with Wegovy on a plane

When you travel with Wegovy through an airport, pack your pen in your carry-on, not your checked luggage. Cargo holds can hit extreme temperatures, and if your bag gets lost or delayed, you’re without your (expensive) medication.

Wegovy pens are completely approved through TSA and other airport security — the same goes for Ozempic and Mounjaro. Just be ready to declare your medication at screening and have it ready to be scanned separately. Tbh, I’ve never gone through security and officially “declared” mine. I just took it the case out (didn’t open it) and put it next to my purse when going through the scanner and no one batted an eye.

Because I carry my pen in the special case, I can’t keep it in the original packaging. But I ripped off the front bit with the pharmacy/prescription details and tucked it in the case. I also had a printed copy of my prescription in my purse if anyone needed to see it. But truly no one cared lol.

Heading to Borneo

Most Wegovy travel cases only keep things cool for around 8 hours, which had me concerned about my 24-hour Auckland-to-Toronto haul. But it held up fine. Actually, Wegovy’s storage rules are more forgiving than you’d expect:

  • Ideal storage: 2°C–8°C (36°F–46°F), refrigerated.
  • Room temperature: Up to 30°C (86°F) for up to 28 days.
  • Hard limits: Never exceed 30°C (86°F) and never let it freeze

Keep the case away from hot air vents or like, hot food containers during the trip, and make a beeline for your accommodation when you land to get it back in the fridge.

Is it better to travel with Wegovy pills or injection pens?

If you want to travel with Wegovy, it’s much easier to do with pills than the injection pens. However, rather than switching from injections to pills when you’re already abroad or just about to leave for your trip, talk to your doctor about it first.

It’s not a one-for-one trade with the dosage. So if you’re currently taking 1mg injections, you’ll need a professional to tell you whether you should swap to the daily pill dosage between 1.5 and 25mg.

But yes, the pills would simplify the whole thing. No need for a cooling Wegovy travel case or needle disposal box. A pill bottle is much smaller to toss in your bag. However, one notable downside is that you have to take a pill once per day, rather than a once-weekly injection.

Can I travel with Wegovy unrefrigerated?

Yes, you can kinda travel with Wegovy unrefrigerated — within reason. According to this digital version of the Wegovy package leaflet in the UK: “You can keep the pen for 6 weeks when stored at a temperature below 30°C or in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C) away from cooling element.”

So don’t let it get too hot or too cold, but it doesn’t need to be in the fridge every moment of its life. I covered this in the tips section, but I want to make sure you see it. I feel like there’s a common misconception that Wegovy and Ozempic have to be fridge-temp at all times.

The key here is that it should stay refrigerated until it’s opened. Then you don’t have to worry so much about keeping it cold, as long as it’s not hot.
