One of the greatest things about living in Auckland is how many outdoor escapes there are so close to the city. With a quick drive or ferry ride, you can find yourself in a completely new area to explore. Whether you want to try NZ’s wines, spot wildlife, get in a good hike, or simply chill, here are the best day trips from Auckland.

Best day trips from Auckland
One of my favourite things about Auckland is how you can enjoy all the benefits of living in a big city but make an easy escape on the weekends. Here are some of my favourite island getaways near Auckland to consider for your next staycation:
Waiheke Island
Ferry: $46.50-62 return
Ferry + Hop On Hop Off Bus: $99 return
Time to island: 45 minutes
This is easily one of the most popular day trips from Auckland, which can make it a bit hectic on a weekend in the summer. There are countless wineries to visit on Waiheke, but don’t forget to check out the artsy and charming town of Oneroa or stroll one of the walking trails along the coast for great views. There are some of my fave wineries.
-
- Wild on Waiheke: I’m pretty sure it’s the only winery that offers archery, clay target shooting, and cozy bean bag chairs next to the vineyard. It also has a great beer selection if you need a break from all the grapes.
-
- Man O’ War: Definitely one of the best in terms of actual wine quality, and the expansive outdoor patio sits right next to the beach. So you can enjoy lunch with the sound of waves crashing on the sand. The only downside is that it’s far from everything else, but it’s definitely worth the trip if you have time. They now have a direct ferry from Auckland to Man O’ War.
-
- Mudbrick: One of the most famous and therefore busiest, but for good reason. This hilltop winery and restaurant is in a charming old stone mansion, where you can enjoy dinner at sunset and stay the night at The Lodge if you’re ready to splurge on some bougie accom.
Rangitoto Island
Ferry: $55 return
Time to island: 30 minutes
Hike up a dormant volcano for something a little different. To be fair, Auckland is full of these, but there’s something a little more magical about it when it’s an island. You can also explore some lava caves, which I have to admit sound cooler than they are, but are still worth a little detour on your way up to the summit.
One of the coolest things about the island is that it’s a nature reserve, so there are no shops, restaurants, or hotels. The most direct route to the peak only takes an hour or so and boasts some pretty nice views of the Auckland skyline!
Hobbiton
Drive: 2 hours from Auckland
If time is limited, you can do a Hobbiton day trip from Auckland. You can make it a self-drive day trips from Auckland or join one of the many tours that run daily. Even if you’re not a big Lord of the Rings person, this is worth doing. I’ve seen the movies but am not by any means a top fan, and I still had a blast! When in Middle Earth, ya know? It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing to do in New Zealand.
One really important note: You’ll need to book this in advance! Tickets to the Hobbiton Movie Set sell out weeks if not months in advance during the high season. So this isn’t an easy spontaneous excursion — make sure you get your tickets ASAP.
Rotoroa Island
Ferry: $95 return
Time to island: 75 minutes one-way
Not to be confused with Rotorua, in the Waikato, you won’t find any glow worms or geothermal activity here on the island of Rotoroa. BUT for a more off-the-beaten-track adventure, this island offers lots to explore with fewer crowds. The whole island is a nature reserve, just like Rangitoto, but Rotoroa is more famous for bird watching opportunities.
We did some nice walks to viewpoints and beaches around the island. There are a handful of cute accom options, too. So you can make this a day trip from Auckland or a longer overnight island getaway for a longer escape from the big city.
Leigh (Goat Island)
Drive: 1 hour north of Auckland CBD
Another easy self-drive day trip from Auckland, Leigh itself doesn’t have much going on (respectfully) but Goat Island is stunning. There’s also a nice 1-2 hour loop walk around Ti Point, and you can stop for a beer and nice lunch at Sawmill Brewery.
It’s important to know you can’t actually step foot on Goat Island because it’s a protected marine preserve. But the short Auckland day trip is still well worth it if you’re into marine life because you can swim, snorkel, and kayak around it. PADI recognizes it as one of the top dive sites in New Zealand!
I swam next to sting rays, saw giant fish, and even spotted a teeny tiny baby octopus. I’m not even exaggerating when I say some of the fish were nearly as big as I am. If you’re lucky, you may see dolphins and whales, and, if you’re not so lucky, sharks. Obviously, this is far less common.
If you’re doing more than a day trip and heading to Northland, Goat Island is one of the best stops to make between Auckland and Whangarei.
Multi day trips from Auckland
I couldn’t not mention these epic locations near Auckland, but they’re much better suited as weekend getaways rather than day trips.
Great Barrier Island (Aotea)
Ferry: $102+ one way
Flights: $140-300 one way
Time to island: 30-minute flight, 4-hour ferry. (Why not fly one way and ferry back?)
It’s a bit challenging to access, but once you’ve figured out getting to Great Barrier Island, it’s like another world entirely. That’s why it’s really not day-trippable from Auckland, but it makes a perfect long weekend trip.
Highlights on the island include the challenging 6-hour Hirakimta (Mount Hobson) summit track, Kaitoke Hot Springs (free!), and Medlands Beach. It’s a stunningly beautiful place with a slower pace of life.
Great Barrier Island camping
Accommodation on the island can be pretty expensive and you’ll need a car to get to all the best trailheads. So I highly recommend getting one of these rooftop tent camping cars. I did it for a weekend solo camping mission back in 2023 and I had the best time.
It’s a budget-friendly way to see the island, but there are some pros and cons. For example, once you’re parked up and have set up camp, you can’t just hop in the car to pop to the store — you’re locked in place. But in my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons.
Hobbiton & Waitomo
Drive: 2 hours to Hobbiton, 2.5 hours to Waitomo
Movie Set Tour: $130
Ok yes I’m mentioning Hobbiton again. Like I said above, it’s not realllllly at its best as a day trip. It’s a long enough drive that it’s better to turn your Hobbiton Movie Set trip into a weekend getaway.
Home to some of the best glow worm caves in New Zealand, Waitomo is literally (not figuratively) otherworldly. Go from Auckland to Hobbiton and drive straight to Waitomo after the Movie Set Tour.
Beyond the caves, there’s also the Mangapohue Natural Bridge and Marokopa Falls to visit nearby. Here’s how to spend the perfect weekend in Waitomo.
Coromandel
Drive: 2.5 hours from Auckland
Going over to the Coromandel is another fun destination that would be insane as a self-drive day trip from Auckland, but works as a weekend getaway. You must, of course, visit the picturesque Cathedral Cove (of Windows screensaver fame).
Additionally, the challenging 8-hour Pinnacles Hike is a stunner. You can do it in a day (that’s what I did) but you’re better off spending the night at the Pinnacles Hut right near the summit. Hot Water Beach is a major draw to the Coromandel, but tbh I think it’s really overrated. If you’re looking for cool geothermal stuff, head straight to Rotorua.
The Homunga Bay coastal hike is super scenic and much shorter than the Pinnacles, and Donut Island is one of the best kayaking spots in New Zealand.
