GUATEMALA

When to visit Guatemala

The best time to visit Guatemala is November to April, when the weather is sunny, dry, and ideal for exploring. If you can time your trip with Christmas and/or Easter, you’ll get to experience colorful festivals as well. This is also the best season to hike Acatenango, which is cold at the top no matter when you go. But less cold and wet during this time.

You’ll see fewer tourists and maybe even get cheaper hotel prices in the off season, but there will be more rain. However, this means lush landscapes, perfect for dramatic photos of Tikal ruins and the towns around Lake Atitlan.

Must-Do Activities

Here are some activities not to miss when you’re in Guatemala! Antigua was my favourite place, with access to Acatenango and Pacaya volcanoes, and the adorable (and kinda weird) Hobbitenango. Antigua is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has real charm.

Getting an eSIM in Guatemala

Getting an eSIM takes the headache out of trying to fumble your way through Spanish to get a physical SIM card. You can activate it as soon as you enter the country, making it a kinda no-brainer travel tool for your next trip.

Holafly eSIM

Holafly is the top option if you’re a digital nomad. All their eSIMs have unlimited data (and the ability to hotspot).

If you’re traveling for a long time, they just released “Holafly Plans,” which is like a little subscription system. It includes a set monthly fee, global coverage, and unlimited data. So if you’re like me and love Google Maps, Netflix, and work remotely, this is your best choice.

Saily eSIM

Saily was created by the team at NordVPN. Their eSIMs are some of the most affordable on the market and come with additional security features and ad-blockers.

This is a great option if you’re a budget backpacker! They also have regional options that cover more of Central and South America if you’re bouncing around.
